Why this bookclub?
I grew up in a family of readers.
I adore reading. It has always been a huge part of my life. When I think back to memories of my childhood, I can easily create an image of my father sitting in a big green armchair, legs crossed at the ankles, seemingly unable to hear anything around him as he became lost in the story in his arms, or eyebrows furrowed in concentration in the often-found textbook on his lap. My mother, legs tucked under her in the coziest of ways, curled up in the corner of the couch, smiling at the latest antic in her story. My sister would be on the opposite end of the couch, book positioned on legs tucked in tight. Me, looking over the top of my book at the others, a room nearly silent, but filled with a message of family, education, knowledge, shared interest.
Now, with a family of my own, I look on adoringly at my daughter who creates play from a page on a book. She will prop a book open on a favorite page and take over the story with her creativity. It’s incredible. Daily we read more books than I could keep track of, often the same ones over and over again.
Working in the online world, I am often surrounded by images, which also tell a story – a very clear and clever way to do so, but I haven’t swayed far from my roots. I still opt to print off documents, sit back with a pen and read from the paper with notes to be created in margins. As often as I listen to podcasts, and audiobooks, I still mark up the pages of a real life book. As simple as it is to load my ereader with classics and borrowed gems from an online library, I cannot resist lining my shelves with beautiful bindings, trophies of finished journeys with the author – A true challenge for someone on a mission to declutter a tiny home when I can’t quite shake my compulsion to purchase books (more on that here).
I love books. And I love that I’m sharing this love with my daughter and the children in my care.
But as I dove into this world of my work, I found that I didn’t have as much time to read for interest sake rather than learning and development.
I was missing the bookclubs I have long been a part of but now can’t quite make meetings due to packed schedules or having to prioritize my calendar of events with the many roles I have been taking on as of late.
So, I came up with a solution. I wanted to combine my love of reading and sharing in the adventure of the learning and revelations, with those who I love to work with; parents and educators.
And so began the little bookclub we’ve been building online. A free Facebook Group where we read the same book inside of a month (or so) and share our thoughts on the story (or text – we plan to cover a lot of topics).
If you’re interested or know someone who is, please share this link with them. We are building a safe community to share ideas about childhood development, ways to enrich the communities that surround our children and to help give the little ones we love the voice that will empower them for the future. We would love to hear from you, hear your perspectives, learn more about your experience and share in our bookclub.
Looking forward to meeting you!
